MiCOM Labs provides comprehensive IEC 62368-1 safety testing and certification for audio, video, information, and communication technology equipment. As an A2LA-accredited testing laboratory (ISO/IEC 17025, Certificate #2381.01) with direct certification authority in the US, Canada, EU, UK, and Japan, we deliver fast, accurate testing with real-time visibility through our proprietary MiTest® platform.
IEC 62368-1, titled “Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment, Safety requirements,” is the international safety standard that replaced IEC 60950-1 (for information technology equipment) and IEC 60065 (for audio/video equipment) on December 20, 2020.
Unlike prescriptive legacy standards, IEC 62368-1 takes a hazard-based safety engineering (HBSE) approach. This methodology focuses on identifying potential energy sources, classifying their hazard levels, and implementing appropriate safeguards rather than prescribing specific design requirements.
Our IEC 62368 testing services cover the full spectrum of hazard-based safety requirements, from electrical and mechanical testing to documentation and certification support.

The standard applies to a broad range of products used in homes, offices, schools, data centers, and commercial environments:
MiCOM Labs delivers fast, accredited IEC 62368 testing through its A2LA-accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 17025) and certification body (ISO/IEC 17065), with unique access to both bilateral and multilateral MRAs covering 15 global markets. Proprietary automation platforms shorten test cycles and report timelines while providing real-time visibility and provisional results during testing. Combined safety, RF, EMC, environmental, and cybersecurity testing under one roof ensures speed, accuracy, and end-to-end compliance support.
IEC 62368-1 represents a fundamental shift in product safety evaluation. The standard classifies energy sources into three categories based on their potential to cause harm:
| Energy Classification | Effect on the Body | Effect on Combustible Materials | Safeguard Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class 1 (ES1) | Detectable but not painful | Ignition not likely | No safeguard required |
| Class 2 (ES2) | Painful but not causing injury | Ignition is possible with a limited spread | At least one safeguard is required |
| Class 3 (ES3) | Can cause injury, including fibrillation, burns, and cardiac arrest | Ignition is likely with rapid fire spread | Double or reinforced safeguard required |
30 Vrms | 42.4 Vp | 60 Vdc
50 Vrms | 70.7 Vp | 120 Vdc
Equipment must comply with either voltage or current limits for the applicable energy class.
The standard defines multiple safeguard types to protect users from hazardous energy sources:
Primary protection measures designed into equipment
Become operational if basic safeguards fail
Two independent safeguards, such as double insulation
Single safeguards providing protection equivalent to double safeguards
Protective earthing, electrical enclosures, fire enclosures, insulation
Safety marking and user instructions
Reliance on the abilities of skilled persons
As an A2LA-accredited laboratory, MiCOM Labs offers comprehensive testing capabilities that support IEC 62368-1 certification:
Various international standards, including IEC 62368-1
Temperature, humidity, and immunity testing to validate product performance under various conditions
A2LA-accredited electromagnetic compatibility and interference testing
Our proprietary MiTest® platform provides live project status and real-time data feeds during testing. The platform enables you to export provisional PDF results while testing is ongoing. This unique capability allows engineering and design teams to receive immediate feedback and make adjustments without waiting for final reports.
MiCOM Labs holds direct certification body status under bilateral Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs), enabling the fastest possible certification timelines in key global markets:
| Market | Authority | Certification Body Status |
|---|---|---|
