What Is IEC 62368-1?

IEC 62368-1, titled “Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment,  Safety requirements,” is the international safety standard that replaced IEC 60950-1 (for information technology equipment) and IEC 60065 (for audio/video equipment) on December 20, 2020.

Unlike prescriptive legacy standards, IEC 62368-1 takes a hazard-based safety engineering (HBSE) approach. This methodology focuses on identifying potential energy sources, classifying their hazard levels, and implementing appropriate safeguards rather than prescribing specific design requirements.

The Hazard-Based Safety Engineering Approach

IEC 62368-1 represents a fundamental shift in product safety evaluation. The standard classifies energy sources into three categories based on their potential to cause harm:

Energy Classification Effect on the Body Effect on Combustible Materials Safeguard Requirement
Class 1 (ES1) Detectable but not painful Ignition not likely No safeguard required
Class 2 (ES2) Painful but not causing injury Ignition is possible with a limited spread At least one safeguard is required
Class 3 (ES3) Can cause injury, including fibrillation, burns, and cardiac arrest Ignition is likely with rapid fire spread Double or reinforced safeguard required

ES1 Limits (below 1 kHz)

30 Vrms | 42.4 Vp | 60 Vdc

ES2 & ES3 Limits

50 Vrms | 70.7 Vp | 120 Vdc

Equipment must comply with either voltage or current limits for the applicable energy class.

Types of Safeguards

The standard defines multiple safeguard types to protect users from hazardous energy sources:

Basic safeguards

Primary protection measures designed into equipment

Supplementary safeguards

Become operational if basic safeguards fail

Double safeguards

Two independent safeguards, such as double insulation

Reinforced safeguards

Single safeguards providing protection equivalent to double safeguards

Equipment safeguards

Protective earthing, electrical enclosures, fire enclosures, insulation

Instructional safeguards

Safety marking and user instructions

Skills safeguards

Reliance on the abilities of skilled persons
