What Is IEC 62368-1?

IEC 62368-1 is the international safety standard for audio/video, information technology, and communication equipment. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission, this hazard-based standard replaced IEC 60950-1 (information technology equipment) and IEC 60065 (audio/video equipment) in December 2020.

Unlike its predecessors that used prescriptive, incident-based requirements, IEC 62368-1 employs a hazard-based safety engineering approach. The standard classifies energy sources in products, prescribes appropriate safeguards against them, and provides guidance on their application.

The current 4th edition (IEC 62368-1:2023) spans 823 pages and addresses electrical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical hazards in equipment ranging from smartphones and laptops to professional broadcast systems and telecommunications infrastructure.
