What Makes a Device Class III
The FDA classifies medical devices into three risk-based tiers. Class III sits at the highest level. The FDA defines Class III devices as those that support or sustain human life, hold substantial importance in preventing impairment of human health, or present a potential unreasonable risk of illness or injury.
Implantable pacemakers and coronary stents are common examples. Because general and special controls alone cannot assure the safety and effectiveness of these devices, Section 515 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requires PMA approval before marketing.

Non-Clinical Testing

Clinical Data
Clinical investigations involving human subjects must comply with 21 CFR Part 50 (Informed Consent) and 21 CFR Part 56 (Institutional Review Board requirements).
