Pre-Testing
Engineers debug your prototype and identify the root cause of each failure before formal testing begins.

MiCOM Labs tests your consumer electronics product and certifies it to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and EU requirements from one accredited lab in Pleasanton, California. Your engineers review draft results within days of your unit arriving at our lab.
MiCOM Labs supports your project from early debugging through final reporting.
Engineers debug your prototype and identify the root cause of each failure before formal testing begins.
MiTest® collects measured data during each test and automatically builds your report.
View pass-fail results in a secure cloud portal, with each test page available for review on any device.

Find your product type below to see the testing and certification support MiCOM Labs provides.
| Product Type | What MiCOM Labs Tests | Key Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Products | Tests each intentional radiator, including required Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) testing for applicable 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands | FCC radio certification before the product enters the market |
| Wired Digital Devices | Measures unintentional emissions and performs EU immunity testing, including electrostatic discharge (ESD) and surge | FCC Part 15 Subpart B and EU EMC Directive requirements |
| Products With Pre-Certified Radio Modules | Defines host-product testing and performs co-location testing when multiple radios transmit at the same time | The module’s FCC grant does not cover the finished host product’s unintentional emissions |
| Internet-Connected Wireless Products Sold in the EU | Uses MiCyberCert® to assess products against EN 18031 cybersecurity standards | RED Article 3.3 cybersecurity requirements for applicable products since August 1, 2025 |
Compare the certification requirements for each market and the MiCOM Labs designation tied to them.
| Market | Required Approval | Rules That Apply | MiCOM Labs Designation |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | FCC ID, or a Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) for eligible digital devices | Title 47 of the Code of Federal Regulations (47 CFR), Part 15 | Telecommunication Certification Body (TCB) |
| European Union | CE marking | RED 2014/53/EU for radio products, or EMC Directive 2014/30/EU for wired digital products | Notified Body under the RED and the EMC Directive |
| UK | UKCA Marking | Radio Equipment Regulations SI 2017/1206, or Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations SI 2016/1091 | UK Approved Body |
| ISED: Canada | IC: Marking | Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada RSS standards (e.g., RSS-Gen, RSS-247) | Foreign Certification Body (FCB) |
| MIC: Japan | Radio or telecom marking (Giteki Mark) | Japan Radio Law (Article 38-2-2) and Telecommunications Business Law | Registered Certification Body (RCB) |
As your TCB, MiCOM Labs reviews your test data and issues your equipment authorization grant. One MiCOM Labs team manages your file from first test to FCC ID.
For radio products, you self-declare conformity and add the CE marking when you fully apply the EU’s harmonized (officially recognized) standards. When you can’t, our Notified Body team examines your technical design and issues an EU-type examination certificate.
Use these figures to compare MiCOM Labs with any other lab on your shortlist.
Gordon Hurst, BSc, CEng, MIEE, founded MiCOM Labs in 2001, and the company has had the same ownership since. The same project team handles your file from the first test to the final report.
Engineers in MiCOM Labs’ RF lab measure emissions up to 220 GHz.
MiTest® generates test reports, including some over 1,200 pages, in about 4 minutes.
MiTest® backs up your test data on encrypted servers every two hours.
Certificate 2381.01 covers ISO/IEC 17025 testing. Certificates 2381.02 and 2381.03 cover ISO/IEC 17065 product certification.
MiCOM Labs supports type approval in more than 40 markets beyond its primary regions.
If your product contains a radio transmitter, it generally needs FCC certification through a Telecommunication Certification Body (TCB). Most wired digital devices, including many Class B personal computers and peripherals, may qualify for a Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) under 47 CFR 15.101. Some products, including scanning receivers and radar detectors, still require FCC certification.
Yes. Under the EMC Directive, you can use internal production control, the procedure where you test the product and self-declare conformity. You can also choose EU-type examination by a Notified Body such as MiCOM Labs.
No. Under the RED, your finished product counts as radio equipment, so you must show that the whole device conforms. MiCOM Labs defines the tests your device needs.
Yes. Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada recognizes MiCOM Labs as a Foreign Certification Body (FCB). MiCOM Labs also serves as a UK Approved Body under the UK Radio Equipment and EMC Regulations.
